The Delhi Capitals are considering making David Warner the captain of their team in the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). On December 30 on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, their usual captain Rishabh Pant was almost killed in a car accident. It seems improbable that he will recover in time for the IPL. The Delhi Capitals must decide shortly who would succeed him as captain and wicketkeeper.
According to a Times of India article, the franchise may contact Warner shortly about the part. Also known is that the Delhi Capitals might ask Sarfaraz Khan to put on the gloves in Pant’s place. “Pant has been the mainstay of the middle-order. Warner has experience in leading IPL teams. The management will speak to him. The middle order needs an impactful Indian batter now. Sarfaraz will be asked to keep wickets if the combination asks for it. Meanwhile, the team will be looking for a domestic wicketkeeper or a strong batter,” the source said.
Interestingly enough, on December 23 of last year, Delhi Capitals won the auction and hired England wicketkeeper Phil Salt. The team can consider selecting him as Pant’s replacement even though he was only a backup choice at the time. The team’s balance would then likely be affected, forcing the franchise to sit either Mustafizur Rahman or Anrich Nortje. Additionally, there is a good likelihood that Yash Dhull, the captain of India who won the U19 World Cup, would get an opportunity to play in the 2019 IPL season given the need for Rishabh Pant’s successor in the middle.
