Star Indian hitter Prithvi Shaw kept up his impressive success in domestic cricket for his state team Mumbai, and on Wednesday, January 11, the 23-year-old opening batter recorded his first triple hundred during the team’s Ranji Trophy match against Assam. At the Amingaon Cricket Ground in Guwahati, during the Ranji Trophy game versus Assam, the right-handed batter reached the milestone.

The former India U-19 skipper made a solid case for his inclusion in the Indian Test team for the forthcoming four-match Test series against Australia, which begins on February 9 in Nagpur, facing a total of 326 balls to score his first triple hundred in the Ranji Trophy.

Prithvi has so far participated in five Test matches for India, with the most recent one taking place on December 17, 2020, in Adelaide against Australia. He hasn’t competed for India since going to Sri Lanka in July 2021 with the reserve team. He made his T20I debut for India in that series but was dismissed for a golden duck, and despite making significant runs in domestic cricket for his state team, the India A squad, and in the IPL as well, he has never played again for India.

The Mumbai native’s outstanding hitting strike rate did not prevent him from being often passed over for the white-ball team. But now that he has recorded a triple century, he has contributed to recapturing the selectors’ attention. Shaw’s triple century versus Assam is notable because of his batting strike rate. He had amassed 41 fours and two sixes by the end of Mumbai’s 107.3 overs of play, and his strike rate was 91.79.

Mumbai was playing in their fifth game in the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy, and after failing to have a significant impact in the previous four games, Shaw had reached his peak just in time. Along with Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, former vice-captain of the Indian Test team, too dazzled with his performance and produced an undefeated century. He had a batting average of 103.
