Prithvi Shaw has long been regarded as having a unique talent. The outstanding batter was introduced into the senior men’s team at an early age after making a name for himself with admirable performances at the U-19 World Cup and domestic cricket. He quickly lost favor though. He last participated for India in a T20I match in July 2021. Shaw has not recently been selected for Team India despite his strong performances in domestic cricket.
The second-highest individual scorer in Ranji Trophy history, Shaw rewrote the record books on Wednesday with 379-run innings for Mumbai against Assam. Not only that, but the opening batter went on to set a new Mumbai record for the most runs an individual batsman has ever scored in a single Ranji Trophy innings. In a match at the Amingaon Cricket Ground in Guwahati, Shaw accomplished the record by slamming a commanding first triple hundred (379 in 383 balls). Venkatesh Prasad, a former Indian bowler, requested Shaw be added to the team after his most recent accomplishment.
“A rare and special talent- Prithvi Shaw. Whatever may be the issues that are keeping him away from the team, it’s the job of the management to give a chance and have effective communication with him which helps both him and Team India,” Venkatesh Prasad tweeted. Prithvi has scored runs in a variety of formats, and with the abundance of skill in Indian cricket or just plain bad luck, he ought to have made the team. But in Indian cricket, impressions spread quickly and can make or destroy careers.
“Sometimes, you do get frustrated,” said the U-19 World Cup-winning India captain. “You know you are doing your things right. You know you are doing your processes right, you are honest with yourself, disciplined with your career on and off the field. But sometimes people do talk differently. People who don’t even know you judge you,” the hurt was palpable in his voice.
