Rashada Williams of the West Indies was penalized 15% of her match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The event happened on Friday during her team’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 match against Ireland in Group 2. Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match,” was broken by Williams, and he was found guilty of it.
Williams’ discipline record has also been updated with one demerit point. The keeper’s offense was his first in 24 months. Williams intentionally made physical contact with Ireland bowler Leah Paul during the sixth over of the West Indies batting after being run out. Williams acknowledged his mistake and agreed to the punishment Shandre Fritz of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees had suggested.
The requirement for a formal hearing was unnecessary. The accusation was made by the on-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Vrinda Rathi, the third umpire Lauren Agenbag, and the fourth umpire N Janani. Level 1 violations are subject to one or two demerit points, an official reprimand, and a maximum fine of 50% of the player’s match fee.
