The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023’s initial season has so far produced several exciting moments. Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore did not have as successful of starts to the league as Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and UP Warriorz had.
Gujarat Giants notably received the worst of starts to the tournament as their skipper Beth Mooney suffered an injury in the first round of the WPL, where they faced Mumbai Indians. In a recent development, it was revealed that Beth Mooney, who is injured, will be replaced for the duration of the season by South African cricketer Laura Wolvaardt. In order to be available for Gujarat Giants, Woolvardt, who was in Pakistan for the PCB Women’s League exhibition matches, was released by her side.
As the new Beth Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt will aim to make an effect right away. Wolvaardt represented Super Women at the 2023 Women’s League Exhibition games in Pakistan on the day of the announcement. On March 8, Super Women defeated Amazons, and Wolvaardt led her team in scoring with an unblemished 53 points off just 36 deliveries.
Gujarat Giants have failed to claim a victory in either of their two games thus far in the 2023 WPL. In the competition’s opening game of the season, Gujarat played the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians, who scored 207 runs before being bowled out for just 67.
Their situation was made worse by Beth Mooney’s injury at the beginning of their inning. They then faced off against UP Warriorz, losing that match as well. Although though Gujarat Giants’ batting prowess had greatly improved, they were still unable to defeat UP Warriorz, who won the match by three wickets.
Gujarat has amassed a whopping 201 runs as they prepare to face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the sixth round of the competition. The team will be attempting to defeat an RCB team that is already having difficulty in the competition.
