The World Test Championship (WTC) final for the second season is scheduled to occur at The Oval in London on June 7. In the WTC summit match, the league leaders Australia will square off against India. In the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Indore, Australia defeated Rohit Sharma and company by nine wickets to advance to the final.
As a result of New Zealand’s stunning victory over Sri Lanka in the opening round of their two-match series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, India had already earned their position. Incidentally, India defeated Australia 2-1 in the four-match series after the last Test in Ahmedabad finished in a tie.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra has questioned why England is the event’s sole host now that the WTC finalists have been announced. Chopra also thought that the WTC championship game should be replaced with a three-match series. He believes that the weather in England will not be favorable for the Asian teams and suggested that the teams play a three-match series, with one match at each team’s home stadium and the other two being played at neutral sites.
Chopra took to Twitter and wrote, “Why do WTC Finals happen only in England? Neutral venue but it mirrors non-Asian conditions. Why does it have only one game? Why not have a Test series to determine the World Test Champion? Why not have one test each at home and one at a neutral venue? Ambitious…yes, of course.”
“No tournament lasts two years to find its winner. So, please don’t throw ‘final should be one knockout game’ in my direction. Test cricket is a very unique sport…lasts five days. The championship lasts two years. Finals can surely be a 3-match series,” he concluded in another tweet.
India and Australia will lock horns in the summit clash of the World Test Championship in June. This will be the second time India will be playing in the WTC final. India lost the first-ever WTC final against New Zealand, where Kane Williamson and Co. emerged victorious by eight wickets.
